The goal is to create or identify 100 prayer groups with at least two people each who commit to pray together for their college or school on a regular basis, by the end of the year 2010.

The Vision

Can you imagine what it would be like if there were a group of committed, Bible-believing prayer warriors in every school across America? Can you imagine these groups teaming up every week or every day to share concerns and successes, acknowledging God and asking Him to bring a revival in their school?  Can you imagine the impact such groups would have, even if only a few existed?  A witness for Christ would be unleashed which would be powerful.

This is the vision of the YCLA for Operation PI. “PI” stands for Prayer Initiative.  We are counting on you to help us build a network of praying youth!  Leading a few friends in prayer once a week is not hard, especially with the support and resources the YCLA is making available (see below).  Even if you don’t think you are the “leader type,” you could simply mention the Operation PI idea to someone who could do it.  It's easy to participate!

Homeschoolers can also join the vision. Just pray regularly as a family for your schooling activities. Or, you could organize a prayer group in your church or co-op.

Let's watch God work in guiding us, strengthening our leaders, and empowering our education!

Steps to Success in the Prayer Initiative

1. Determine in your own heart and mind that you will pray for your school at least once weekly for at least three months.  Ask God to show you His power in your school.

2. Find another young Christian leader to impart the vision to, who can help lead the effort.

3. Begin asking your friends to join you in prayer.

4. Let your school administrators know your intentions and see if they are willing to help you in any way.  If they are not receptive, you may need to set up your prayer group as a before- or after-school club.  Public school administrators are legally responsible to allow such clubs.  Or, you can simply pray together at a home, or elsewhere outside school property.

5. If possible, set a weekly date and obtain permission from the school to use a spare room during the time you set.  Cooperate if teacher supervision is suggested.  If a spare room cannot be used, find another semi-private but easily-identifiable location at which to meet, such as a side lobby or staircase.

6. Post flyers (templates available here) or advertise in another means of your choosing.

7. Wait two or three days; then, again encourage your friends to support your school with you in prayer.  Know when to keep the pressure up and when to back off.  Have "emotional intelligence."

8. Be patient.  It may take several months for your group to begin to grow.

9. Continue seeking and following God’s guidance as you promote the prayer group.

10. Keep sessions short, and always thank participants for their involvement!

Why Participate in Operation PI?

1. Watch God work and see the power of prayer
2. Provide a clear setting for your fellow-students to thank God and acknowledge Him
3. Help bring together core groups of young people for future action

What's the Big Picture?

Sometimes we become so involved in "serving God" in things which our school or church tell us to do, we forget to actually relate His power to our lives.  An Operation Pi group gives students a place to put their experiences in perspective, in a way which is independent of outside pressures, yet constructive and edifying in its environment.  Furthermore, the existence of such a group gives a kind of solidarity to those with a heart for Christ.  It enables students to discuss issues with God in the presence of others.  Lastly, God does indeed answer prayer.  Positive change in people's hearts and minds is a sure result of an impassioned, consistent outpouring of our hearts to God.

Will Operation PI Displace Existing Groups?

Public schools, especially, often already have religious organizations which pray for the school, which is excellent.  Operation Pi is not designed to compete with them.  (Of course, if more than one group of praying individuals exist in a school, no one will be hurt.)  A bigger need, however, is actually in Christian schools.  In some cases, the nearly all-encompassing presence of information about God can lead to an apathy regarding such "little things" as asking God to work.  The goal of this project is to help re-spark a desire for the power of God in our lives.
